Main Uses of Sodium Azide

1. Gas-generating agent for automobile airbag(the largest global consumption field)

Sodium Azide is the core raw material for traditional airbag gas generators.

When ignited by collision impact, it decomposes rapidly to release massive nitrogen gas and inflate the airbag instantly for human buffer protection.

2. Fine chemical & pharmaceutical synthesis (second-largest application)

Sodium Azide is served as an azidation reagent to introduce azide functional groups:

• 1)Manufacture intermediates of antibiotics, antiviral and anti-tumor medicines;

• 2)Raw material for click chemistry to produce triazole and tetrazole pharmaceutical & dye intermediates;

• 3)Applied in Curtius rearrangement and other organic reactions to produce amines and special chemical materials.

3. Production of primary explosives (strictly regulated military industry)

Sodium Azide is used to synthesize lead azide, copper azide and other highly sensitive primary explosives for detonators and pyrotechnic initiators. This application is under strict public security and military control, and ordinary chemical enterprises are prohibited from related business.
